Michael Forrow

Club Coach

UKCC Judo Coach Level 2

Coaching Experience

I have been coaching judo for 14 years, working with both mainstream and additional needs judoka, from beginners aged 4 years and above through to adult players.

The majority of my coaching experience has been at Westerleigh Judokwai, where I have enjoyed helping judoka of all ages and abilities develop their skills, confidence, and enjoyment of the sport. In 2017, I was honoured to be selected as an Assistant Coach at the Special Olympics National Games, supporting athletes competing at a national level.

In addition to my club coaching, I have also coached at Buckswood School, delivering sessions to groups of over 60 students, helping to introduce young people to the values and techniques of judo.

Competitive Background

I began my judo journey at the age of 15, competing in my first tournament at the YMCA in Hastings. Since then, I have competed across the UK in events ranging from local club competitions to international tournaments.

Throughout my competitive career, I have had the opportunity to train alongside some of Great Britain's top judoka, including Olympians Ben Quilter and Ashley McKenzie, experiences that have greatly influenced my development both as a competitor and as a coach.

As my competitive career progressed into my early twenties, my passion increasingly shifted towards coaching, with a focus on supporting and developing the next generation of judoka.

Beyond the Mat

Since joining Westerleigh Judokwai, I've been better known by my long-standing nickname, "Larry"—a name that has stuck with me throughout my time at the club.

Away from coaching, I have been heavily involved in supporting the club behind the scenes. Over the years, I have managed a wide range of IT and media projects, from creating club resources and promotional materials to producing DVDs, maintaining the club's website, and managing its social media presence. These roles have allowed me to contribute to the continued growth and success of the club beyond the dojo.
